We've become fairly heavy tablet users. Here are some we like.

Asus Zenpad 3s 10

This tablet as become the new workhorse. I miss the small size of the the Nexus 7, but the Zenpad 3S 10 has a great display, great sound, 4Gb of RAM, and 64Gb of storage. The CPU is a dual core 2.1Ghz ARM with 4 additional mediatek processors. It screams!

This tablet is essentially an Android copy of the recent iPads. This is a good thing, very good build quality, and both light and thin.
  Nexus 7 (2012) by Asus

The first version of the Nexus 7 was released in 2012. These worked great for years, but became a bit slow as newer Android versions were released. Luckily there is very good support for the Google tablets and after putting the familt tablets on the "SlimKat" KitKat ROM, they still are still usable. Most of ours are now backup tablets.

Nexus 7 (2013) by Asus

When Google released the 2013 version of the Nexus 7 it was ahead of it's time. Even as I write this in 2017 the display resolution, RAM (3Gb), and Storage capacity (16G/32G) are hard to find in a tablet under $300. It included QI charging, an excellent display, and had very wide aftermarket support.

This tablet has been a workhorse and was used daily for years. It's still a handy size and I keep it as a backup.
